We’re so proud of Floral Feelings, Inc. It’s by far the best section on this site for learning how to deal with relational problems you may be having with a Christian friend or family member. |

A man will drive around, completely lost, and refuse, time and again, to heed the wisdom of his date, to stop for directions. He will decline a friend’s offer to help carry a heavy load, even at the risk of a hernia, and would rather get soaking wet, dashing from the parking lot to a restaurant, than accept the umbrella held out to him by his wife. Women on the other hand, are the picture of humility...and PROUD of it! The Real Truth All humanity displays the damaging aspects of a proud, unwilling to yield, spirit. Men may be more prone to it than women, and certainly some people are prouder than others. Pride can be found in athletes, politicians, CEOs, and among people of every religion. Yes, that even includes Christians. We are not exempt from this toxic behavior called pride, and that can create some big problems for people interested in the Christian faith. When a Christian yields to pride, and doesn’t admit that they don’t know the answer to a question a friend poses about God, a roadblock can be created on the friend’s spiritual search. We can push people away from us, and our faith, by looking down on them because of their behavior, forgetting that we too behaved the same way before becoming a Christian. We can even make the picture of our faith less appealing or confusing by refusing to consider that how we’re living out a biblical principal might be wrong. What Can be Done? You and I will never be able to eliminate the pride in the world, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some options to consider. Reflecting on the fact that members of the human race don’t become perfect just because they begin to follow a certain religion or philosophy, can be a good place to start. If we have an unreasonable expectation about a friend or loved one, we’re just opening ourselves up for disappointment. Growth is a process, often a slow and messy one; just ask any new parent. While we’re waiting for the pride to subside in the person we care about, we might cast a glance into history and examine the person some think was never tainted by pride. His name is Jesus. If what I read about him in the Bible is true, and if I’m understanding it correctly, Jesus never strutted his stuff or got that ‘I’m better than you’ look on his face. And that’s even though he spent his years on earth in a vastly different role than what he was used to. Who was this man who did the work of a household servant and thought nothing of giving up the lifestyle he was accustomed to? The accounts of his life in the Bible stand in stark contrast to the picture of humanity we see every day. Pride is truly not something mankind has developed a solution for, though one may exist in this person people try to follow, when they call themselves Christians. |
